The Pain On the Outside of the Foot May Have Nothing To Do With Your Feet
If you are a runner at heart there is nothing more frustrating than being benched. As runners know, those things that are hardest on us are the injuries that persist without any cure. Pain in the feet, specifically pain on outside of foot can be one injury that can plague the most well conditioned athlete among us.
If you are experiencing pain on outside of foot, don’t run to the emergency room right away for an X-ray. The most likely culprit for your discomfort has absolutely nothing to do with your bone structure. That is both good and bad. At least when you have a fracture, or bone break, you know that at some point it will heal and you will be back out on the trail.
If you are experiencing pain on the outside of the foot the first thing to do is to trade out your shoes. If you are using your shoes too much, or not changing them frequently, they are wearing in different places. That will cause stress on the stabilizers of the foot and cause pain in different places. A good running shoe can only provide the appropriate stability for 200 miles. If you are a long distance runner that can mean that you should switch out your shoes every two months. Although that can get costly, it is the best way to prevent pain on outside of the foot.
If you change your shoes and you still get no relief for pain on outside of foot then you may be experiencing muscle tightness in your mechanics that is causing the pain. If you aren’t involved in a regular stretching regime, now is the time to begin one. Making sure that your muscles aren’t short and tight is important to keep yourself out on the trail. If you have weakness, or imbalance, it is going to show somewhere and may take you out of the running, literally.
Even though you are a runner, you may want to consider alternating your running with other activities such as weight training or yoga. They are both activities that will keep you strong bilaterally, and in great shape all around. For your muscles to be able to withstand the harshness that running can put on your body, you have to totally condition your body from head to toe. Strengthening your joints, while giving your feet a break, is the best way to come back from pain on outside of foot.
